His brother Laxman and wife Sita accompanied him to the forest. It is believed that after defeating Ravana, Lord Ram along with brother Laxman and wife Sita returned to Ayodhya after the completion of their banishment.

The day on which they returned is to date celebrated as Diwali with the same enthusiasm and auspiciousness.
